ok,
let's have some fun. here are some photos from my march 7th visit to
friendship learning center in beautiful north fond du lac, wisconsin.
click on the pictures to see a larger version. my appearance here
has become an annual event, and i'm not sure exactly how many years i've
been coming here...(eight, nine?) anyway, here's what (usually) happens.
I construct an armature that can withstand the abuse of twenty five or
so nine year olds. the past two sessions have been the construction
of totem poles. years past had us exploring the realm of
dinosaurs...
I
used some square boxes stacked one on top the other to establish the
main bulk of the totem pole armature. i covered the boxes with 6-foot
wide chicken wire (the widest stuff I'd ever worked with-it was great),
and added features of the totems with celotex - the insulation board.
the
students (4th grade) arrived in groups (waves) of 4 or 5 and after
getting newspaper strips (and themselves) wet with papier mache' paste,
draped the strips over the armature to build the sculpture. as you can
see from the group pictured on this page, it is a lot of fun. |
